Alex Burden’s artwork is a poignant reflection on humanitarian issues, using the sculptural frames as both canvas and vessel to shed light on the realities faced by migrants in their quest for a better life.
In Across the Sea, the artist confronts the brutal realities of people smuggling, an international, profit-driven network operating with a reckless disregard for human life. Through sculpting individual faces, she aims to evoke empathy and restore identity to those too often rendered faceless and nameless. Many do not survive the dangerous crossings they are forced to undertake, and their stories remain unseen and unheard. By focusing on the intimate details of each face, she reveals the personal struggles behind the statistics and the human cost behind the headlines.
Her contribution to the project is both a tribute and a call to action, an attempt to raise awareness of the complex realities surrounding migration and to honour those who risk everything in pursuit of a safer, more dignified life.
