One of the defining themes in his work is the portrayal of jazz musicians, often extracted from magazines and album covers. Many of his pieces are dynamic, layered, and three-dimensional compositions. Key works include Jazz Phenomenon, displayed at the Jazz Bakery in Culver City; Love That Thing Called Jazz, a tribute to the genre featuring drumsticks and piano keys signed by some of the most influential jazz artists; and a collaborative piece with Gregory Dahl and Sam Pace, centred around a historic baby grand piano.
In addition to his jazz collages, Ray creates large-scale abstract paintings on masonite boards using paper and acrylic.
