Peace and Love

Orry Shenjobi

“The people, the places, the food, the smells, the sounds, it's just a very colourful
life (Lagos, Nigeria) - I try to reflect that as much as possible in my work.”
Peace and Love
Peace and Love is a heartfelt celebration of Nigeria's vibrant traditions, beautifully merging them with contemporary fashion. The design is inspired by Nsibidi, an ancient system of symbols from Southeastern Nigeria. These symbols, which have been used for centuries to convey messages of peace and unity, are not just decorative; they carry profound meanings of love and wisdom. By incorporating these into modern eyewear, Orry has created a dialogue between the past and the present, tradition and innovation. The colors gold and black are rich with significance; gold symbolizes wealth, prestige and the vibrancy of life, while black represents strength, resilience and the grounding power of the earth. The matte finish of the glasses pays homage to the natural materials traditionally used for Nsibidi carvings, like stone and wood. This artwork is a call to action; It's about loving more, connecting more deeply and working for peace in every moment.

Personal work
Shenjobi's artistic practice is influenced by the duality of her origins, creating work that reflects both personal experience and collective history. She explores the complexity of identity and its deep connection to community, examining how people see themselves, how they're seen by others, and how cultural heritage, memory, and everyday life contribute to that understanding.
Rooted in photography and documentation, she captures everyday moments that reflect the interconnectedness of our lives, and which become the foundation of her multidisciplinary practice. Working directly on photographs, Orry's paintings achieve a striking realism, making her characters come alive. Using a vast range of both traditional and upcycled materials—each carrying its own history—she creates immersive, multi-dimensional pieces. Her technique of layering and texturing surfaces adds depth and vibrancy, emphasizing the complexity and vulnerability of human experiences. Through her work, Orry invites us to see, remember, and engage, as she celebrates people, their communities, and their traditions.
