Antifaz Biomorphic

Federico L. Méndez Castro

To me, it's like the grain of the wood writes a certain
music, and my hands can't help but dance to it.
Antifaz Biomorphic
For his artwork, Federico L. Méndez Castro uses the frame as a foundation for creating modern, biomorphic, and organic wood sculptures. Drawing inspiration from the modernism of the 1950s and ’60s and influenced by artists like Calder, Ico Parisi, Gio Ponti, and Alberto Viani, he incorporates subtle touches of colour into his work. The sculpture is designed to be removable, held securely by two brass pins, allowing a dynamic interaction between structure and form.

VENEZUELA
Federico L. Méndez Castro is a master wood sculptor from Caracas, Venezuela, with over 35 years of experience. Blending personal narratives with the organic nature of rare woods, he creates intricate sculptures where the grain, bends, and natural imperfections of the material guide the form as much as his hand.
Personal work
Deeply influenced by the artistic traditions of the Pacific Northwest, Federico’s work is a delicate balance between nature and craftsmanship. His sculptures reveal a powerful dialogue between opposing forces; precision and freedom, structure and fluidity, nature’s unpredictability and human intention.
His signature approach involves respecting the wood’s natural curves and textures, often inspired by the human body, especially the spine, and using them to craft elegant, harmonious shapes. Méndez Castro’s work is an ongoing search for pure form, where balance and movement create dynamic tension within each sculpture.
